According to medicinenet.com, the IUD is a device inserted into the uterus to prevent contraception, there are many different forms it can come in, there is a coil, loop, triangle, or T shape which is very popular; there is also the choice of plastic or metal. The only way to insert the IUD is by professional use, and one can stay in for about 10 years while the other needs to be replaced every year. The way that IUDs prevent pregnancy is still unclear, but they know that it prevents sperm and eggs from meeting.
The side effects of having in an IUD are: missed periods, bleeding and spotting between periods, heavier bleeding during the first few weeks after device insertion, abdominal pain, blasting, vomiting, depression, changes in mood, loss of interest in sex, rashes and itchiness on skin. Many doctors don’t tell you about most of the side effects, which is why it is important for you to do research and ask questions.
I honestly have not heard of the IUD until I took a a Global health class my first semester. This goes to show how important it is for women to learn at a young age at least in high school to know about the different forms of birth control. Not every one is fortunate enough to go to college. Even then If I hadn’t taken the Global Health class or a WGSS class I would not have known about it. It is very important for me and many women in college to know many ways of protecting herself.
It took researchers many tries to develop the right IUD shape that would work for women. Eventually when researchers found the right size and shape for the IUD they were so happy, but it was at the cost of many women. Before they could find the right shape and size that fit each individual woman, the trials caused the women to be in so much pain. The women that this was directed towards is low income, women of color, and women who don’t have steady careers.
Not all women are shaped the same, yet they still designed a device that only fits a general uterus. Dr. Dalken Shield and Robert Israel figured out what the measurements of a uterus was they did not consider how long, narrow, wide or short it was. Not asking what was comfortable or if they wanted this in their bodies, the experimenters just inserted it. They made their IUD seem more accommodative and desirable because it was fitting towards different women's uterus shape. Dr. Dalken Shield and Robert Israel IUD changed the way that IUDs were looked at; sue to so many deaths, and infections and high rates of infertility. Some women without the access to a personal doctor have actually take the IUD out, which you could only imagine as being painful and not safe at all.
“IUD developers felt are to test their innovations in women in the name of human welfare. Searching for the ideal technology, while producing authoritative knowledge regarding intrauterine contraception, these researchers in effect took on the role of producing techno-scientific bio-power (page 42). The way that I interpret this is that they are saying that low income women don’t have the education to know what is right for her body and that more authoritarian figures knows whats best for them which is not the case, only that woman knows how she feels when there is something wrong or uncomfortable.
Doctors suggested that minority women who were living in poverty use this. Women in poverty who want this might not have the access to medical care, or transportation to get protection like this. Also some IUD can stay in your body for up to 15 years, and if you don't get a regular check up then it would difficult to make sure you don’t have an STD that could infect the IUD and other dangerous affects of inserting the IUD. Also
Women who have been forced by their country law to have the IUD placed inside of them have no idea the side effects or how it will change their body. Governments are trying to change this way because they don’t want to have to pay for women to take care of their children. If they are on welfare or unable to take care of themselves first then they believe that they should not have children.
There are many forms of birth control, doctors and healthcare providers should be able to help women find what is better for them. Also informing women about the different ways to protect themselves from getting pregnant when they are not ready to be a mother.
